Build Blog

The Cager

Testing the blog page.  June 17, 2010. Man oh man have I been busy as ever.  I just can't seem to keep up with it all.  Going to Sturgis this August and the days are going by like fence pickets.  Just finished the "Cager" yesterday.  Cager is a concept build for the boys at 290 Customs in worcester, MA.  The donor bike is a crash victim Honda HRC51 sport bike.  Originally the motor would hang from it's aluminum factory frame. Wanting the American style chopper look with this pain in the ass to build around engine.  We conjured up the typical lower frame with the same concept as the stock frame mounting.  We fabricated arms like mounts pinned thru the backbone and bolted thru the stock mount holes in the block.  Hand made "I Beam" single downtube with a mounting collar welded from the gusset work.  Mounting collar?  Well ya see the caged backbone and mounts are removeable to pull and install the engine. The seatpost has an internal sleeve that holds the rear of the backbone and seat mounts all in place and the collar up front bolts the mating collar together.  Quick change if you would, or is it? Well anyway we added some torque rods connecting the arms and another one to the bottom of the downtube.  This particular engine uses the lower case  as the swingarm pivot so we took advantage of that and used it for an additional mounting point, so a big fat 3/4" bolt thru the rear of that engine is going to help with that latteral support... well thats it for now, next is the 45 Manum single loop for Rich out of CT... later...Tig
